Internships and Opportunities: Where to Find Them

By Robyn Lam

There are many internships and opportunities available for individuals to improve their experience upon a topic and learn new skills. However, it may be difficult to find open ones to apply for whether it be your first time searching or your 100th. This blog is designed to introduce you to great tools to help you get started.

What is an Internship?

An internship is the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification. Internships can be taken on by high school students, college students, and more. There are many different levels for internships so whether you are new to the topic or an expert, you will find a wide range of internships open for you!

Benefits of Getting an Internship

Gain Experience

Participating in an internship connects you with a huge network of professionals in the workforce. You can learn more about the topic you are interning in and you gain real-world experience. Internships allow people to improve upon their skills and connect with others.

Learn New Skills

Internships also open a new door for you to explore new skills and concepts in multiple fields. Not only do you gain exposure to your field of interest, but you also interact with other fields that work with you throughout the internship. Learning new skills is great for the future jobs and opportunities!

Resume

Including a short description of your internship will be a great highlight to your resume. Not only will it show that you have past experience in that field, but it demonstrates your ability to take on large projects and a responsible role. Internships help you stand out amongst the rest of the applicants when applying to a job and different programs.

In addition to adding it to your resume, you can add it to your applications when applying to different jobs and opportunities. College applications, for example, would be a wonderful application where you can add your experience as an intern. Becoming an intern is an opportunity that helps your application stand out and demonstrates your passion for your field of interest.

Where to Find Internships and Opportunities

RoundPier

RoundPier is a wonderful place where you can find multiple opportunities and internships open. It is similar to LinkedIn if you have used that before in the sense that you can connect with multiple people around the world. Many new opportunities and programs are posted on RoundPier, allowing you to find a wide range of internships and opportunities that you can apply for.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a very popular application that people use to post and apply for internships and opportunities. You can create your own resume there that describes your skills, education, experience, and more! There, you can connect with people around the world and companies that you may be interested in. You can choose to be notified about open positions and internships in your field of interest and you can create strong relationships with people from the app.

Community

In addition to turning to social media, you can ask people from your community. Whether that be sending emails to professors at your local college and/or university, you can ask college students if they are interested in working with you on a project. There are many research projects that occur throughout the year, so no need to worry about sending an email by a certain deadline. Not only does this provide you with an opportunity that may cost less, but you can get hands-on experience from people who live nearby.
